Flintshire County Council is on the ropes yet again and faces an uphill struggle to win back the good will and trust of its battered & financially stressed work force after a monumental “cock-up” somewhere at the top of the administration.  Who got it wrong? Whose head should roll?  When will members receive notification of what went wrong and when can this mess be rectified? What appals me is the of scale of the deductions.  Two leisure services members are each losing a gut wrenching £6K.  By chance, I spoke to them whilst dealing with a routine constituency enquiry and both ladies are beside themselves with worry.  A few hundred pounds for a few was what we had been led to believe and clearly no one has linked points for jobs with what it means in £/shillings and pence! Even the unions who were consulted every step of the way seem to have been misled too. Councillors have been badly let down by those paid well to protect this Authority.  The Coalition has been cuckolded by a slick PowerPoint presentation and soothing blandishments from people we were entitled to trust when we voted to accept the scheme last August.  What seemed like a good idea from Europe and accepted by a compliant, “lost the plot”, mired in expenses row  Westminster government has got it spectacularly wrong: it’s the poor workers that now bear the pain. A huge cheer for Cllr COLIN Legg who made his feelings known and bravely supported the work force in this week’s Chronicle.  Surely this is the task of the leader, Arnold Woolley.  It seems that not one word of regret or comfort to beleaguered staff has come from our Leader.  Shame!  It seems that rather than attend his own Independent Group meeting on 15th October, where Single Status was the top item, environmental issues in Staffordshire took priority and he allegedly buzzed off for a two day jolly! Oh Dear! I feel that this missive will soon be winging its way to the Public Services Ombudsman, as this is what Cllr Woolley has been doing with my correspondence with him in the last few weeks. I know I risk being accused of breaking more codes of conduct but so be it. The way the matter has been handled is a shambles.  Someone must be called to account! We need strong leadership or the Coalition will continue to sink into oblivion as more problems mount up. And dear readers, the problems of which I am aware could immerse the County Council into further disgrace and bad publicity!  Much has still to hit the fan! Keep up the criticism and comfort to staff, Cllr. Colin Legg.  I am very proud to be your Consort.

  1. a misrable council worker says:

While the single status farce has been bad (I lost £5K) looking over Google, it seems obvious that the same thing happened EVERYWHERE that it was tried – I didn’t hear that when I was filling in my form.

Secondly, it seems obvious to me that the whole purpose of single status is to reduce the employment figures at FCC legally.
The people who have had their income dropped are commercially valuable people who can easily get jobs in the private sector – and that is what they will do. The cost to Flintshire CC is that all the bright, able people will go. Consequently, the remaining staff will be those who are unemployable in a job where effort is required – the sort of people who get their 6 months sick pay every few years!
The result is that there will be less people within the council within 2 years, and the council won’t end up in a employment tribunal hell for reducing their figures by 30% or so.

When Flintshire finally realises that there isn’t enough cake to go around, they will merge with Wrexham and the whole farce will start again!

I can’t afford to lose £100 a week, but what can I do? The unions were the ones who started this whole single status thing in the first place with their equal pay campaign. Well they got it – now everyone is badly paid regardless of ability!
