Q28 Alison Halford:

What action has the Minister taken to prevent buyers using the foot and mouth situation to pay farmers less for their products? (OAQ10610)

Carwyn Jones:

I am monitoring the situation carefully. A combination of increased costs for UK slaughterhouses and reduced availability of imported meat following outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in other EU member states may lead to higher meat prices. There is, however, no evidence of supermarkets profiteering as they continue to seek to meet consumer demand.
